I made three quilt backs this weekend, which means I need to baste three quilts. Egad. I really want to like spray basting, but I just don't. I can't get the hang of it, and I always end up giving up halfway through and switching to the pins.
I gave the spray one more chance with my sliced coins quilt. No good! So I'm giving up and sticking with pins. At least I feel like I have some control over the outcome!
Today I decided to make the best of it. I popped open a Diet Coke, turned on an episode of Criminal Minds (current obsession...not to be watched when you're home alone), and reminded myself that all of that pinning leads to happier things!

I'm sorry you don't have much success with spray basting - I love it! Hate pins with a passion.... But Criminal Minds is awesome, isn't it? My current obsession is Grey's Anatomy...
Oh I was really hoping spray basting would save me lots of time! I hate pinning quilts but this week I have read about four different negative reviews of spray basting. Looks like I will save my money and stick with the pins!
I HATE PIN BASTING!!!!
My trick to spray basting...lay out a piece of batting, smoothing it out completely..then lay on the backing (you can do the top 1st, but i've always done the backing 1st, just my personal preference), smoothing it out completely....once the two layers are as smooth as you can get them, smooth them out some more...turn the backing down so that it's laying on top of the other half of backing, take the basting spray (after you have shaken the can really really really really good) and spray about 6"-12" row..pull the backing over it and smooth out...repeat until you have that half done and then repeat with other half of the backing...once you have all the backing done wait about 10-20 before flipping it over to repeat with the top layer.
This is how i always do mine, and since i use the living room floor, i put in a good movie that i haven't watched in awhile.
3 quilts in one weekend wow lol! I've not tried spray basting it sounds too messy! And I agree about not been home alone while watching criminal minds :)
Hi Katie,
I'm the same, though I've never tried spray-basting - I don't like spray of any kind, other than water spray to take of marker :) I don't like the lack of control I have, stuff spraying all over the place... My problem with the pins is that if I have 2 large quilts (e.g. double/queen), I run out, but I keep forgetting to pick up more pins :) Will have to write it on my shopping list one of these days!
WOW! 3 quilts to baste! I LOVE spray basting. I do it in my classroom (before or after school) where I have big tables, and I still tape down the batting.
The one in the photo looks like a lovely quilt, however you baste it! I usually spray the smaller ones, but pin the big ones. I'm also hooked on Criminal Minds, thanks to my husband. What's the deal with Prentiss??
