Woo hoo! A Christmas gift finish! This will be for my grandma. It's a small throw (about 45x55), but she's a small woman, so it should work. The Garden Fence pattern is so fun to work with. The tutorial is from Hyacinth Designs.
I chose to stipple this. It really seemed like the logical choice. The DS Quilts Picnics and Fairgrounds has a vintage look, and I thought the crinkly finish would pair well with it.
I picked up some of the new DS Quilts Sugar Creek fabric for the backing. The typo on the selvedge drives me nuts!!
After I bought the fabric, I remembered my grandma gave me this red floral print awhile ago. I think she said she got it on a trip she and my grandpa took to Hawaii. I decided it would be fun to incorporate this into the back, so I made a jumbo Garden Fence block. Yes, this pleases me.
I was worried about this red fabric of unknown origins bleeding on my white fabric, so I soaked it in a vinegar solution and prewashed it. I threw in a few Color Catchers when I washed the quilt and had no problems (whew!).
I had lots of the Sugar Creek print left over, so I used it for the binding too. I know I got some of my sewing genes from my grandma, so I'm excited to give this to her.
Looks great! And congrats on already having a Christmas finish done! I always seem to put mine off till about 2 weeks before and then spend the whole time in my sewing room!
ReplyDeleteso cute Katie! :)
ReplyDeleteI love it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the jumbo back!!! I may have to make another one with this block but jumbo!! I really enjoyed making the Garden Fence quilt.
ReplyDeleteSo cool!!! I adore the back! :) And that typo still makes me laugh!

ReplyDelete(yes, that selvage IS ridiculous. curious.)
beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat is the perfect choice for the back! And how cool that you are using fabric from your Grandma in a quilt you are making for her? Great job!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful quilt, and I love the back too!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so great! I saw that tutorial and have it saved for a christmas quilt gift I need to finish - yours gets me motivated! I love how you did the big block for the back!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! It's really gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGREAT finish, Katie! I love it, especially what you did with the back! :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE what you did on the back!!! I am almost done with my JUMBO garden fence quilt top, and I have been thinking how I wanted to finish the back. I never do just one piece of fabric, I love this idea. I will have to do 4 or 9 or 16 even, because my quilt is 100 squares big on the front side. hmmmm will have to see what fabrics I have leftover and then decide what I am doing.
ReplyDeleteOh!! I love it!! It is just wonderful! The back is AWESOME!!! Your grandma is going to love it!!
ReplyDeleteThis is 100% fabulous. I love everything about it! Especially the back - brilliant choice. Your grandma is going to LOVE it.
